Author interview – Dr. Harsh M. Chheda

Dr. Harsh M. Chheda is a distinguished lecturer, social activist, economist, and a profound influencer in the realms of spiritualism and Jainism. With over a decade of deep-rooted engagement with Jain philosophy, Dr. Chheda has devoted his life to understanding and imparting the profound wisdom of spiritualism. In addition to his academic and professional pursuits, Dr. Chheda has authored the enlightening book The Mindful Peace: A Journey to Serenity. This work is a testament to his dedication to sharing the ancient, invaluable knowledge of Jainism with a broader audience.

We took tis opportunity to have a detailed and enlightening conversation with Dr. Harsh Chheda. This interview explores his background, motivation, mindset, and upcoming projects.

1. Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to write The Mindful Peace: A Journey to Serenity?

[Harsh Chheda] I am a lecturer, social activist, economist, and influencer for spiritualism and Jainism. For over ten years, I have been deeply connected to Jainism and its roots. During this time, I have experienced profound levels of spiritualism through the knowledge and guidance of my Guru, TapaGachhiya Jainacharya Shri TirthBhadra Suriji Maharaja. The depth of understanding I’ve gained through Jainism is unparalleled.

While I was experiencing the heights of bliss, I noticed my friends struggling with stress, worries, depression, anxiety, and hypertension. They were never joyful or happy. This realization led me to think about how the most valuable knowledge of our culture wasn’t transmitted properly to the new generations. The depth of meditation and spiritualism in our country has the power to calm anyone, but not everyone has had the privilege or luck to access it. Since I have received this knowledge, I felt a responsibility to share it with those around me.

My book is a small effort to preserve and transmit the real and ancient knowledge of our country. It aims to help others achieve the same spiritual peace and understanding that I have found through Jainism.

2. How did your personal experiences influence the content and themes of the book?

[Harsh Chheda] Starting meditation and making it a daily habit can be challenging. However, with gradual progress, you can enter spiritualism. Spiritualism is not only about meditation; it also involves understanding the temporary aspects of our lives and recognizing our own flaws and demerits. Once we understand these, we can work towards removing them from our lives. This is a slow and gradual growth process for every being, leading to a profound sense of satisfaction, bliss, and happiness. Since this is a process that must be experienced firsthand to guide others effectively, this entire book is influenced by my personal experiences and the guidance I have received from my Guru.

3. Can you explain the core message of The Mindful Peace: A Journey to Serenity in your own words?

[Harsh Chheda] The core message of my book is to understand the temporary nature of all things in our lives, including our bodies, and to release our attachment to them. By living a life with peace and awareness, we can distinguish between what is necessary and what is not, thereby protecting ourselves from unnecessary turmoil.

4. What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

[Harsh Chheda] I don’t expect much from the readers. The content in this book is tough to digest; it may take 3-4 reads to understand it. What I hope is that people will recognize the wrong things they are doing in their lives. After reading this, their vision towards life and other things should change.

5. How do you define living a life of purpose, joy, and fulfilment?

[Harsh Chheda] Living a life of purpose, joy, and fulfilment can only be achieved through self-awareness. Joy and fulfilment are completely tied to satisfaction, which can only be gained internally. If we keep focusing on external things and products, we can never attain true fulfilment. Another important aspect is living a life of purpose. The purpose of our life is to utilize our valuable time wisely. This means living a life of real happiness and extending that happiness to all living beings around us. I’ve used the word ‘real’ before ‘happiness’ because many people are under illusions about what happiness truly is. Every living being wants to be happy and making them happy is our purpose. Our goal should be to emit positivity for everyone all the time.

6. Can you talk about some of the practical steps and exercises you recommend for cultivating mindfulness and self-awareness?

[Harsh Chheda] I would not mention them in short as they are different for people with different issues. One step may work for someone and may not for another. So, it is important to understand everything first. I would suggest first reading my book. You will get all the required information and guidance from it.

7. Your book addresses a wide range of readers, from teenagers to adults. How did you ensure that your content would be relatable and accessible to such a diverse audience?

[Harsh Chheda] My book is designed to foster maturity and facilitate personal and internal growth. Mental growth is not confined to a specific age; it can occur at any stage of life. I’ve seen many children who exhibit more maturity than some 60-year-olds. While age can impact maturity, it is not the defining factor. Therefore, people of any age can benefit from reading this book. However, I especially recommend it to teenagers and young adults, as they are in a crucial stage of personal growth and development. Starting their growth early can help them achieve incredible heights in their life and career.

8. What specific challenges do teenagers face today that The Mindful Peace can help them navigate?

[Harsh Chheda] The main challenges teenagers face today include peer pressure, lack of understanding, short-temperedness, lack of foresight, and rapid westernization. These issues heavily impact their lives, placing them under constant pressure. Due to a lack of understanding of the right things, they often make wrong decisions. My book addresses these challenges in detail, providing guidance and insights to help teenagers navigate these difficulties. I hope that the content will be significantly helpful to young people, enabling them to make better decisions and lead more fulfilling lives.

9. How can adults benefit from the principles and practices outlined in your book, especially in the context of today’s fast-paced world?

[Harsh Chheda] As I mentioned earlier, this book focuses on the development and growth of internal aspects of life, particularly in the context of a fast-paced world influenced by westernization. It offers a clear vision of right and wrong, eliminating many western habits and ideologies. By shedding light on everything we do in our daily lives, the book aims to guide readers towards more meaningful and fulfilling living. I am confident that adults, too, will benefit from the insights and guidance provided in this book.

10. What was your writing process like for this book? Did you face any challenges?

[Harsh Chheda] Writing this book was quite easy for me as I had clarity about all the things I’ve addressed in it. I wrote this book in just one night and the next day when I woke up, it was already published. So, for me, publishing this book was easier than making my driving license.

11. Did you draw inspiration from any other authors or books on mindfulness and personal development?

[Harsh Chheda] Yes, I drew inspiration from a few books, including Mera Nij Swaroop by my Guruji Jainacharya TirthBhadra Suriji and LightHouse by Jainacharya Shri Udayvallabh Suriji. There was a Hindi movie Ek Cheez Milegi Wonderful by Jainacharya Shri Yugbhushan Suriji which helped me a lot in my journey. I would recommend everyone who knows Hindi to read both the books and see the movie as well. All three of them are available on the internet.

12. Can you share any interesting anecdotes or experiences from the time you spent writing this book?

[Harsh Chheda] Since this book was shaped and written in a single night, there were no significant anecdotes or experiences from the writing process.

13. Do you have any tips for maintaining focus and mindfulness amidst the distractions of modern life?

[Harsh Chheda] Focus or mindfulness can’t be gained suddenly. It is a slow and gradual process to attain them. What you can do is have small targets for anything. Divide your goals into small achievable targets and have consistency in it. Gradually start making your targets bigger and, eventually, you will reach a stage where you will be completely focused. There are many other remedies I have discussed in the book. You can refer to it for that.

14. How do you suggest readers measure their progress on their journey to serenity and fulfilment?

[Harsh Chheda] I have addressed the answer to this question in my book, and since this question has a deep answer, I will request you all to read the book itself.

15. What’s next for you? Do you have any upcoming projects or books in the pipeline?

[Harsh Chheda] My upcoming project is Raagopanishad, the world’s first detailed and Classical Music album. One of the most marvellous projects aims at restoring and preserving our ancient knowledge of music. The one who refers to the Raagopanishad Granth can ace at singing, and the one who listens to its musical album can heal diseases faster with an effective boost of music. I have added a chapter on acoustic medicine in my book as well, which will help you choose the Raag to listen to and heal yourself.

16. Are there any additional areas of personal development or mindfulness that you’re particularly interested in exploring further?

[Harsh Chheda] I want to try complete silence (Maun), which is the best way for my personal development. I want to practice it once I take Jain Monkhood under my Guruji’s clan in November 2024.

17. What advice would you give to someone just starting their journey towards mindfulness and self-awareness?

[Harsh Chheda] There’s only one piece of advice: stay persistent without caring about the returns or results. The path of mindfulness and self-awareness is difficult and time-consuming at the same time. You don’t have to lose hope. Stay positive and optimistic. Read this book once every year. Also, don’t get negative even if you can’t win against your flaws or demerits. It is very tough to do that. At least you identified them! That’s a big thing to be affirmed about. Now you must stay positive and work on it. Also, read good books and meet better and more positive people who are on the right and spiritual path. Exchange experiences with them and become the reason for each other’s growth. Also, open yourself up in front of good people! Do not keep things inside you. When you have doubts, don’t jump to any conclusion without gaining the right knowledge about it. The identification process of such people is the toughest part of our life, but so is life. Staying on the right path and practicing good things always takes our efforts.

18. How can readers connect with you and stay updated on your latest work and insights?

[Harsh Chheda] I am going to accept Jain Monkhood of the Shwetamber Tapagachhiya sect of Jainacharya Shri Kalapurna Suriji M.S. under my Gurudev Adhyatmanishth Gachadhipati H.H. Jainacharya Shri Kalpataru Surishwarji M.S. and Prashantmurti Jainacharya Shri TirthBhadra Suriji M.S. So, after becoming a monk, I’ll leave all the connections with this world. Even though, if you manage to find me by any chance, you can always come to me. Another way is to go and meet any Jain monk like me, and you will feel the same kind of personality in them too as our sources are the same. Before I accept monkhood, you can contact me through my e-mail: hmckbc9@gmail.com or my Instagram: @hmckbc.

Thank you, The Top Author, for giving me this opportunity.

Hey Chantal Gadoury, it’s great to have you with us at The Top Author. Can you tell us a bit about your journey as an author?

Hello! I am the author of the upcoming release “Until the Last Page.” This novel is actually my 11th publication, which is incredibly exciting! I graduated from Susquehanna University with a B.A. in Creative Writing, which I suppose means that I know what I’m doing (but very much don’t!) I grew up always wanting to be a published author and dreamed of the day when I’d hold a book with my name on it in my hands. It’s very surreal to see the collection of novels I have written and accumulated.

Great to know! So, what sparked your passion for writing? Would you like to share any early memories of writing?

When I first saw the Nickelodeon movie “Harriet the Spy,” I wanted to be just like her. I wanted a composition notebook and I wanted to write everything I saw and everyone that I knew, and I can attest that I definitely got myself into some trouble as a young child doing so. That love for writing only developed further, as I started creating my own stories based on movies I watched. I re-wrote “Titanic” (with drawings, mind you) with a much happier ending. I cut up coloring books and re-created stories for my little sister. Fast forward to when I was 14, I spent my entire summer in front of my computer, writing. I started having writing journals with my high school friends, where we’d take some of our favorite anime characters and build new worlds around them. That love of writing and creating fueled my desire to go to school for creative writing. Years after my college career, I was still writing in communities and outlining my first “novel.” I loved being inspired by the things that I watched as I grew up, and was drawn to creating my own stories; it’s certainly shaped me into the writer that I am today.

You mentioned building worlds around your favorite characters. Now, when you create characters for your stories, do you draw inspiration from real-life people or experiences?

To be honest, both! I’d claim that in almost every one of my novels—previously published and about to be published—there are bits of my friends and loved ones. I often write my dad into my books; after the sudden loss of him, it was a way of keeping his memory alive. I sometimes draw inspiration from the people around me, their habits, and the things they might often say. In “Until the Last Page,” I actually drew on a monumental moment in my life and made it another character’s experience too. I think it really all depends on the character and the situation, but I leave little Easter eggs—though I don’t always mean for anyone to really find them or understand them.

What habits and routine do you have as an author?

As irresponsible as it sounds, I really don’t have a writing routine. At least, not something that I can officially claim as “what I do when I write.” Each story takes shape differently. Sometimes, I buy myself a notebook to write down ideas, and whether I actually use it is something else entirely. I’ll create a Pinterest board to get an idea of what a story might look like, or what the characters look like. I’ll create a playlist of movie scores to build out what the story feels like emotionally. Often, when I’m writing, the soundtracks play into how the characters are feeling; it influences their dialogue and how the scene appears in my mind. Much of my writing is guided by the music I put together for myself. Aside from that, I’m afraid I’m rather boring.

As an author, who does Chantal look up to? Whose work inspires you?

I can remember when I first read “Shiver” by Maggie Stiefvater; it changed my life. After having poured over the “Twilight” series for years and wanting to be an author just like Stephenie Meyer as a 15-year-old, reading Maggie’s work was revolutionary; her series actually made me feel things—I mean, I cried. Since then, authors like Sarah J. Maas (ACOTAR), Erin Craig (A House of Salt and Sorrows), Kelly Creagh (Phantom Heart), Rainbow Rowell (Fangirl), Anna Bright (The Beholder), and A.M. Wright (The Mourning of Leone Manor) have all been very influential in my writing. I know without these authors and their stories—or their immediate influence on me—I wouldn’t be the writer I am today!

When it comes to the author’s mindset, how would you define yours? What fuels your creativity as a writer?

Whenever I go out into the world, I’m not always “looking” for experiences or people to inspire me. I don’t go through a drive-thru hoping that something will spark in my mind, but rather go about living my daily life and, when it comes time to write, reflect back on the interactions that I have with the world around me. When I’m focused on writing, I have to shift my mindset from the happenings of the day and the things that are going on in my life, and sort of dive into this other place in my mind where my story and characters reside. I can’t say that I completely lose myself there; it’s usually a struggle to stay there. I almost imagine it like trying to go underwater with floaties on. Music definitely fuels my creativity. Reading books, watching movies or shows that are even slightly relatable, talking to trusted friends about my story ideas (they pump me up so much that by the end of the conversation, writing is all I want to do!), and sometimes treating myself to something like an iced coffee all help.

As an author, it can be tough at times to get into the zone with all the daily chores. What challenges do you face, and how do you handle them?

Writer’s block is a huge hurdle that I encounter daily. I’ve had incidents where I’m in this block for extended periods, making it hard to focus on writing or even just the act of writing in general. I’m still figuring out how to overcome that. Making time for writing is another struggle. Balancing a full-time job, maintaining consistency with a weight loss journey, being present for loved ones—it can be a lot to navigate, while also wanting to have some downtime (no writing included in that). I just try to do what I can with the limited hours in the day.

What do you think are your strongest qualities as a writer?

I’ve been told that I write emotion well, so I guess I always try to approach my writing with that “strength” in mind. Once I’m in the zone, and I’m fleshing out a character—whether that’s with dialogue or a description, or writing down their inner thoughts—I always try to approach them with a lens of what they’re feeling; why they’re reacting the way that they are. I like to have my characters feel like real people. (I guess all authors do!)

Being an author can be really satisfying. What’s the most fulfilling part of it for you?

I find it most fulfilling when I see that someone enjoyed my story. They want to gush about the characters, the plot, or the dialogue. There’s just something about knowing that your book brought joy to someone else. All those long evening hours, all the words you struggled to type, all the tears you might have cried over how “dumb” your writing sounded—at the end of the day, someone felt less alone. A reader was lost in your world, loving your characters—and it might be a stretch, but they got to know a bit about you too. There was a time early on when I was editing my book, “Until the Last Page,” with my mom. I spent a few evenings reading it out loud to her, and when the dialogue was funny, she laughed! When there were moments of sadness and plot twists, she waited with anticipation for the next scene. It was thrilling to know that something I created did that for someone else (and my mom at that!). Books provided me so much comfort when I was growing up, and if I can do the same for someone else, all of the writing and editing is worth it.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are just starting their writing journey?

Anytime I’m asked this question, I always refer to “just write.” Just write for yourself. Write down the idea that hit you in the shower—even if you’re not sure how to use it, write it down. Don’t worry about the fear of “who will want to read this?” because your audience is out there. And most importantly—don’t be afraid of criticism; it can feel scary to think about someone not liking your story, but it’ll be okay. If someone is trying to help you, remember that their criticism is just to help your writing. It’s not about you personally.

Do you have any writing techniques or tips that you find especially effective?

I always love some good foreshadowing in stories. I certainly haven’t perfected it yet, but it’s definitely a technique that I really love and admire when done well in a story! I enjoy point-of-view novels (which is why I often write in the first person). Imagery is also a really good writing technique to focus on; paint the scene. Just as everyone says in writing, “show, don’t tell.”

How do you envision your writing impacting readers?

I always envision my writing impacting readers positively. When I wrote my novel “The Songs We Remember” back in 2018, I wrote about grief and indirectly about the loss of my dad. I wrote the story with the intention of helping myself, and perhaps indirectly, helping others. It was my hope that my writing would help someone else struggling with grief to make them feel less alone. I think with any of my novels, I’m always hoping that they bring comfort and joy to those who read them. If it can leave them with something to think about or a message that resonates, then I think my job as an author is a success!

With numerous books under your belt, you must have built a strong fan base. Do you recall any memorable moment with the readers that have influenced your writing journey?

My interactions with “readers” probably really began when I was in a writing community on Tumblr during 2011-2013. I remember a lot of people writing in and saying they enjoyed my writing, which I found very surprising and encouraging at the time. When I shifted into writing novels and started to send out ARCs, it was terrifying but thrilling when I’d receive feedback on how well the story had been written. Anytime I wrote a new story, I’d go back to those reviewers and wait with anticipation to see how they enjoyed the story. To this day, receiving messages and fan art, it’s all such a wonderful surprise and something that I really cherish. It really encourages me to continue writing.

Is there anything else you’d like readers to know about you or your work?

Just to go into “Until the Last Page” with an open mind, and be willing to take a fantastical adventure with Josephine and the frog prince. And to keep their eyes peeled for more!

What genres do you predominantly write in, and what attracts you to these specific genres?

I predominantly write in the fantasy/romance genre. I did venture into writing a contemporary romance duology once, and it was fun! There’s something about writing fantasy and romance that I love; the borders of reality and fiction can be fuzzy, and anything is possible. I’ve always been attracted to love stories, so it feels only natural to want to write my own in my career.

How do you maintain motivation and inspiration while battling writer’s block?

I’m still struggling with writer’s block. When I was in the middle of writing “Until the Last Page,” I had an intense period of time (like a whole year) where I didn’t write anything. It finally took signing myself up for Camp Nanowrimo to feel a sense of responsibility to finish the story. I wanted to hold myself accountable and follow through; I owed it not only to myself but to Jo and Aneurin in the story. And I think I just kept telling myself that. I really don’t have a cure for writer’s block—I take the motivation when I can and inspiration if it finds me.

As an author, you’ve probably faced creative stagnation at times. How do you handle those moments when your creativity feels stuck?

I think from the other answers I provided, you’ll see that I take inspiration from all the things around me. It can be a song that I hear on a playlist, a picture I see on Pinterest, a comment that my friend makes to me, a name that I see at work that I want to use—it’s just little moments. And just as I mentioned with writer’s block, creative stagnation is something that I struggle with. There can be periods when I don’t feel creative; everything that I write feels just silly. I’ve learned that I have to write it down anyway and then walk away. I know that if I continue to focus on things, it makes the stagnation even worse. Writing is like a marathon. You don’t do it all at once; you set a pace—sometimes it’s faster, and sometimes it’s slower. It’s about learning to listen to yourself and remembering to be kind to yourself.

What can readers anticipate from your future projects?

I have a few ideas in the works, but that’s all I’m really comfortable saying right now.

Beyond writing, what keeps you busy?

Well, I am a huge fan of historical dramas and learning about British history. Sometimes as I’m getting ready in the morning for work, I’ll turn on “Reading the Past” with Dr. Kat on YouTube and learn something new about history! I’m a lover of K-Pop and K-Dramas and love to spend time watching them with my mom. I enjoy taking walks and crocheting. I’m definitely a homebody and live for the mornings where I can hang out in my pajamas. If you haven’t already guessed, I’m a huge nerd when it comes to Disney. I like to be with people that I love—there’s just nothing better.

Thank you so much, Chantal, for this insightful interview. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your journey and experiences with us. We’re excited about your upcoming book, “Until The Last Page,” and we wish you all the success with it. Looking forward to seeing it on the bestseller list!

From Life Lessons to the book: An Exclusive Interview with Dalton Blankinship

From Life Lessons to the book: An Exclusive Interview with Dalton Blankinship

Dalton “Dean” Blankinship hails from Oklahoma and holds a bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences, as well as a master’s in Health & Human Performance: Health Promotions. Drawing heavily from his own life lessons and experiences, he penned the book, a true labor of love. As any author will attest, the journey of writing is a marathon, and Blankinship’s dedication shines through in his work. “Looking Inwards for a Better Life” serves as a call to action for those seeking deeper meaning in their lives. With personal stories interwoven with philosophical wisdom and actionable advice, Blankinship encourages readers to embrace their true selves and find their unique path in a world often preoccupied with superficial pursuits.

The Top Author had this opportunity to interview Dalton Blankinship to explore his authorship, approach towards writing, his inspiration and many other aspects of author mindset.

What inspired you to write “Looking Inwards for A Better Life,” and what key message do you hope readers will take away from it?

Dalton: I had a series of unfortunate events hit my life, and combined with my inability to get a job despite having two college degrees, it led me to write. I had a lot of pain and anger that I needed to get out, and I thought, why cry or hate when I can create? It was also a personal goal of mine, and I finally got it done, despite many hassles. I’m not trying to send a specific message, but I wanted to help readers make a difference in their own lives, no matter how small. The main tagline, I guess, would be that truth hurts, but honesty kills.

Can you share a personal experience that significantly influenced the themes and insights in your book?

Dalton: Losing my uncle devastated me for years. The process was slow, but I came to one conclusion: I didn’t just bury my uncle but my dad. He left this world right before I got my second degree, and I miss him dearly to this day. I thought I let him down, but that can’t be right since I drove him to his chemotherapy every time he needed it. He even said he couldn’t have made it without me. In the same way, he kept me sane in a world that was getting crazier.

How do you define ‘looking inwards,’ and why do you believe it is essential for achieving a better life?

Dalton: I believe it is the conscious effort to look deeper than where you are now and go beyond what is happening to you. It’s about taking the effort to evolve, to be more of yourself. It’s also about not listening to others and getting to the bottom of that feeling that says you’re enough.

What was your writing process like for this book? Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them?

Dalton: My main challenge was my mental state and trying to process my grief while putting it on the page. I also had to push most of my family away to have time to create, as they just held my book and me back.

How did you balance research, personal anecdotes, and practical advice while writing this book?

Dalton: The structure helped a lot. Each chapter starts with main points and research, then moves to exercises and examples. This approach made me more intentional with my chapters, allowing me to integrate practical advice with personal anecdotes.

Were there any unexpected discoveries or revelations during your writing journey that deeply impacted you or the direction of the book?

Dalton: The book started off much angrier and more ferocious. I felt cheated by everything in my life. But one of the brightest stars in my life went away and left a black hole where my heart was. I realized it was wrong to use my uncle’s memories as a weapon. Instead, I used them as a medium to help myself heal. I had to tear my own heart sinew by sinew in the book to show both the reader and myself that I had one.

Your book aims to help people go deeper and beyond their comprehension. Can you elaborate on what this means and how readers can achieve this?

Dalton: It is a call to action, to take action. We live in a world where niceness is cheap, hypocrisy is expensive, and kindness is priceless. I’m tired of all this “talk” and want people to find more of themselves, to go deeper into themselves instead of seeking validation outside. Our society thrives on insecurities and indecisiveness, and my book aims to help nip each in the bud.

Can you discuss a few practical techniques or exercises from the book that readers can start implementing immediately?

Dalton: The main exercises are at the beginning and end of my book. The first one is finding your cornerstone conundrum—identifying the main problem holding you back. It could be money, education, or some internal struggle, but getting to the bottom of it will help you rise to the top. The next one is to make an excuse to be where you want to be. People often want the easy way and just want to have it now, but life doesn’t work that way, not even remotely, and this makes people suffer.

Which chapter or section of the book is your favorite, and why?

Dalton: Chapter 8, “Embrace the Wolf Within.” It shows a turning point in my life and keeps me going. Knowing that I can do it again gives me strength.

Since the release of “Looking Inwards for A Better Life,” what kind of feedback have you received from readers?

Dalton: The main feedback is that the formatting is off, which can be fixed going forward. Also, some say I’m a bit rambling and trying to sound more like a warrior than a scholar for the next one, along with being more direct with my writings.

Have there been any surprising or particularly touching responses from readers about how the book has impacted their lives?

Dalton: One reader said, “Thank you for making this book,” which really warmed my heart. Another mentioned that it is a kind book, which is what I was aiming for.

How do you suggest readers integrate the principles of your book into their daily routines for long-term benefits?

Dalton: I’d say read the sections where you feel lacking in your personal journey and go from there. It doesn’t necessarily need to be read in order, but it helps to go from society to the individual in terms of theme. There are small exercises that can make a big difference in the long run—aim small, miss small was the underlying principle in my book.

What are your future plans as an author? Are there any upcoming projects or books in the pipeline?

Dalton: I’m writing a companion book, “Don’t Become Prey,” which is a more aggressive and philosophical side to my first book. I’m also working on a short-story/poetry collection that will be my first foray into fantasy.

How do you see the genre of self-help evolving, and what role do you envision your work playing in this landscape?

Dalton: I see self-help becoming more individualized, not focused on some generic cookie-cutter format. The main point is being honest and true to oneself. I hate all the talk without enough self-help. A bigger point is to know when you’re enough and to have fun learning.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write impactful and meaningful self-help books?

Dalton: Find what keeps you up at night, what makes you jump out of bed, and dedicate every morsel of food and every hour to making your life the best it can be. Then, expand that feeling outward to rally others to live their best lives.

Thank you for taking the time to share your inspiring journey and insights with us. Your wisdom and experiences have truly enriched our understanding of “Looking Inwards for a Better Life.” We appreciate your dedication and the meaningful impact your work has on readers.

While I draw inspiration from the vivid tapestry of real life, I find myself venturing beyond the confines of the everyday, allowing my imagination to soar to new heights. Real life serves as my muse, providing me with a vast reservoir of experiences, emotions, and observations to draw upon. Whether it’s the tender embrace of a loved one, the bittersweet sting of loss, or the subtle nuances of human interaction, I am constantly mining the depths of reality for the raw material to breathe life into my characters and narratives.

What are some of the hurdles you encounter as an author, and how do you navigate them?

[Mitrajit Biswas] As an author, I embrace the challenge of making my stories believable, for it is in the suspension of disbelief that the true magic of storytelling lies. While weaving intricate plots and crafting compelling characters, I am constantly mindful of grounding my narratives in a sense of realism, no matter how fantastical the premise may be. Believability is not just about avoiding glaring plot holes or inconsistencies; it’s about creating a world that feels authentic and immersive, where readers can lose themselves without questioning the plausibility of the events unfolding before them. This requires careful attention to detail, from the way characters interact and speak to the environments they inhabit and the rules that govern the world they live in.

This empathetic approach to storytelling enables me to craft narratives that resonate on a visceral level, tapping into the raw emotions and universal truths that define the human experience. Whether it’s the heart-pounding excitement of a high-stakes adventure or the quiet introspection of a character grappling with inner demons, I strive to capture the full spectrum of human emotion with honesty and empathy.

On a positive note, what do you find most fulfilling about being an author?

As a world-builder, I revel in the freedom to craft every facet of my creations, from the towering spires of ancient cities to the sprawling vistas of uncharted wilderness. Every detail, no matter how small, serves to enrich the tapestry of my narrative, adding layers of depth and authenticity to the worlds I create.

What words of wisdom would you offer to aspiring authors just embarking on their writing journey?

Passionate about nurturing future leaders in the hospitality industry, I serve as the Academic Advisor for the IIHM group of institutes worldwide and also teach management modules for MSc students of the National Council of Hospitality Colleges. In addition to my work in hospitality, I am a published author of two successful books and am poised to release my third offering soon. I conduct consulting workshops on areas such as ESG and Responsible Hospitality and deliver Leadership Programs tailored to the needs of hotels and service industries.

Awesome! So, how did you get into writing? Would you like to share any memories or experiences from the past that ignited this interest?

One evening in Malaysia, sometime in 2014, while preparing to leave work, a captivating incident shared by my F&B Head – Rajen Krishnaswamy inspired me to document it. Encouragement from the revered Bagchi family, including Mr. Subroto Bagchi (CEO of Mindtree Consulting then), further fueled my interest in writing about hospitality experiences. Their persistent encouragement led me to publish my first book, “TALES OF A HOTELWALLAH,” during Diwali of 2021, which received positive feedback and motivated me to continue writing. On the home front, my better half, who is also a hotelier herself, Kalpana, has been both my top advocate and critic on this journey. I am grateful to all of them for providing me with the necessary push.

Please talk about your routine as an Author.

I do try to adhere to a daily routine of uninterrupted writing, as advised by a dear friend, Dr. Sandeep Roy, a senior ex-ONGC professional and geo-scientist. This is a challenge, but I realize it can be developed as a process, especially for new authors like myself.

Coming to the characters in your stories. Do they overlap with real-life individuals or experiences?

I draw inspiration solely from real-life characters encountered throughout my career in hotels, including staff, guests, vendors and seniors, as well as interactions with current students and colleagues.

Share your thoughts on Author’s Mindset.

For me, the author’s mindset revolves around spreading joy, happiness, and a sense of goodness through storytelling. I strive to bring humor and insight from the hospitality industry, highlighting its intricacies and behind-the-scenes dynamics.

Who inspires you to be an author?

I have been influenced by the works of Satyajit Ray (especially his short stories), Ruskin Bond, early Chetan Bhagat, Shankar (a renowned Bengali Author who wrote an epic tale of a hotel – Chowringhee), and Mr. Subroto Bagchi, who himself is a fabulous author.

Well, authorship is not a bed of roses. Would you like to mention any hurdles that you faced during the journey.

Initially, finding a publisher was a challenge as an unknown author. However, upon the recommendation of an ex – student, Murtuza Saifee, I embraced Print on Demand channels, leading to successful book releases. Now, my third book is due for release soon.

Your strengths as an author…

I prioritize simplicity, honesty, and relatability in my writing, aiming to make reading enjoyable for a wide segment of audience.

Please pick up a moment that gave you maximum satisfaction as an author.

The most fulfilling aspect for me is getting the opportunity to spread joy and positivity, while also providing insight into our ever exciting hospitality domain to a broader audience.

What advice would you like to give to the newbie authors?

Keep it simple, honest, and enjoyable for readers. I try and focus on maintaining a concise narrative, correct language usage, grammar and presentation, rather than using overly embellished language.

How do you envision your writing impacting readers?

I hope to leave a positive and a happy impression on readers, inspiring them to view the hospitality industry in fresh new and positive light.

Please share any experience or interaction with the readers that influenced your journey towards authorship.

Positive feedback from readers, including remarks that my stories felt like fireside chats, has been encouraging and motivating for me as a novice author. Some have even advised me on how to shape stories for better reading, which has also been a part of my learning curve, for which I remain grateful.

What you’re working on next?

Readers can expect more fun-filled hospitality tales and, soon, a short story book titled “MYTHOS: ODYSSEY OF THE GODS.” In this, I am exploring and bringing to the fore myths from the Levant and beyond. Stay tuned for my upcoming release in July, “MYTHOS: ODYSSEY OF THE GODS.” I am excited to share this new venture with readers.

Apart from books, what keeps you busy? Any hobbies, interests?

I enjoy listening to Hindi film music – especially retro; traveling both domestically and internationally; teaching hospitality students; counseling and encouraging youngsters to join the services industry; and indulging in various forms of entertainment such as reading and watching movies.

Join us as we delve into Anubhav Tiwari’s sensational journey, exploring the inspirations behind their writing, the challenges they’ve faced along the way, and the insights they’ve gained from their unique experiences.

Q. Can you tell us about your journey as an author and what inspired you to venture into blogging?

Anubhav Tiwari: Certainly! My journey as an author began several years ago when I first discovered my love for storytelling. I wrote my first novel, “The Closest Path” 18 years ago, which was an incredibly rewarding experience. However, as I continued to explore my creativity, I found myself drawn to new platforms for sharing my thoughts and ideas. That’s when I decided to venture into blogging. I was inspired by the immediacy of blogging and the opportunity to connect with readers in a more interactive and dynamic way.

Q. What are some of the key differences you’ve encountered between writing books and creating blog content?

Anubhav Tiwari: One of the most significant differences between writing books and creating blog content is the format and structure. When writing a book, I have the freedom to explore complex storylines and develop characters over the course of several chapters. On the other hand, blog content tends to be more concise and focused, often addressing specific topics or themes in shorter formats. Additionally, the feedback loop is much quicker with blogging, as readers can engage with my content in real-time through comments and social media.

Q. How do you approach the process of generating ideas for your blog posts?

Anubhav Tiwari: Generating ideas for blog posts is a constant process of observation, reflection, and creativity. I draw inspiration from various sources, including my own experiences, current events, and topics that resonate with my readers. I also pay close attention to trends in my niche and seek to provide valuable insights and perspectives that add value to my readers’ lives. Ultimately, I strive to create content that is both engaging and thought-provoking, sparking meaningful conversations among my audience.

Q. What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a blogger, and how have you overcome them?

Anubhav Tiwari: One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a blogger is finding a balance between consistency and quality. With blogging, there’s often pressure to produce content regularly to maintain reader engagement. However, I’ve learned that prioritizing quality over quantity is essential to building a loyal audience. Another challenge has been staying updated with evolving trends and algorithms in the digital landscape. To overcome these challenges, I’ve focused on honing my writing skills, staying organized with content planning, and leveraging analytics to understand what resonates with my audience.

Q. Can you share a memorable moment or experience from your blogging journey that has had a significant impact on you?

Anubhav Tiwari: One memorable experience from my blogging journey was when I received a heartfelt email from a reader expressing how much my content had resonated with them. They shared their personal struggles and how reading my blog posts had provided them with comfort and inspiration during a difficult time. It was incredibly humbling to realize the impact that my words could have on someone’s life. This experience reinforced the importance of authenticity and vulnerability in storytelling and motivated me to continue sharing my experiences with others.

Q. How do you envision the future of your blogging journey, and what are your goals moving forward?

Anubhav Tiwari: Looking ahead, I see my blogging journey as an ongoing evolution of creativity and growth. I aspire to continue exploring new topics, refining my writing style, and deepening my connection with my audience. My goals moving forward include expanding my reach, collaborating with other creators, and exploring opportunities to monetize my blog while staying true to my authentic voice. Ultimately, I hope to inspire and empower others through my writing and create a community where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported.
